![]() Fresh off her first win of the 2011 season at the second round of the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Raquel Martinez headed to the 7 Laghi International kart circuit to compete in the second round of the WSK Masters Series. Raquel was looking forward to getting back to another familiar track in Europe.
With no rain in the forecast Raquel looked for a much better weekend than the first round of the series. Qualifying in the 54th position Martinez was ready to move up in the heat races. Starting in the 22nd position in all four-heat races Raquel moved up eight positions in the eight lap heat race finishing in 14th position. In heat two Raquel again got off to a great start and moved up through the field finishing in 15th, but unfortunately in heat three she was knocked out of the race on lap two. The last heat of the weekend was a wild one. As the field came around a took the one lap to go board the came around once again, but did not see the checkered flag. Many drivers thought the race was over and went into the pits. Raquel knew the race was not over and went around for another lap, but was struck by a kart coming back onto the track after making the mistake of going into the pits. Raquel ended the race in 16th.
“This was a tough weekend and I am disappointed that we did not make the final,” commented Martinez. I cannot thank my mechanic Davide and our team manager Antonio enough for never giving up the entire weekend. I am looking forward to the next round of the WKA championship at South Bend where I had my best result last season.”
Next up for Raquel is the third round of the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup where she looks to score a few more wins and extend her championship lead in Komet Jr. Lite.
